The Year 2000 Challenge The Challenge The year 2000 problem is where early computer programmers used a six-digit field to record dates (MM/DD/YY). Computers could read 1/1/00 as January 1, 1900, therefore creating problems in many computer calculations. The approach saved memory and sped up early computer applications. The earlier programming code and standard way of programming was carried over into practically every application that uses some sort of computer or technology. Mandate The NCUA, the federal agency that governs credit unions has mandated that all federally-insured credit unions become Year 2000 compliant. MRCU is 100% aware of all its mission critical and non-critical systems that may be affected by the Year 2000 problem. MRCU has implemented a plan to take the necessary steps to either renovate or replace those systems that are not Year 2000 compliant. We are also communicating and coordinating with third party vendors (ACH, ATM, SHAREDRAFT PROCESSING, PAYROLL PROCESSING, etc.) to ensure their systems that effect our operations are year 2000 compliant. MRCU will devote the necessary resources to have renovated, tested and compliant systems by June 1999. How will this effect my Account? There should be no effect on the safety and access to members account. MRCU is a NCUA federally insured financial institution where member's accounts are insured up to $100,000.00 Renovation Process MRCU will be updating to our computer vendor's latest software version that will be Year 2000 Ready before the end of 1998. Because of the number of credit unions across the country that are being upgraded, MRCU may not be able to schedule the upgrade on a weekend. Therefore, the credit union may be closed one or two days during a week to install the software upgrade. If this does occur, the membership will be notified well in advance to make any necessary arrangement for financial needs and services. The administrative staff at the credit union will do all it can to schedule a weekend upgrade to ensure no interruption of service. !We will be Ready! Our membership should take comfort in knowing that your credit union staff and volunteers are taking all the necessary steps to meet this challenge in order to better serve you and ensure that there is no interruption in service when we ring in the millennium. |
